Jahan Loh (SG)

Artist

Jahan Loh is a Singaporean contemporary artist known for his distinctive fusion of street art, pop culture and Eastern iconography. With a career spanning over two decades, Loh has established himself as a leading figure in the Asian art scene, captivating audiences all over the continent with his dynamic and thought-provoking works.

As the first artist to bring street art to galleries in both Singapore and China, Jahan has been credited as one of Asia’s most successful street artists, for taking Singapore Pop Art international, and for influencing modern art practices in China.

Born in 1976, Loh developed a passion for art from a young age. Influenced by the vibrant street art and hip-hop culture of the 1980s, he began creating graffiti and experimenting with different artistic techniques. Loh’s early endeavors such as his creation of Chinese wild style laid the foundation for his exploration of themes such as identity, consumerism and the intersection of Eastern and Western cultures. Throughout his career, he has been deeply influenced by his Asian heritage, drawing inspiration from traditional Eastern art forms such as calligraphy, ink painting, and religious iconography, which he often reinterprets in a contemporary context.

Not the type to limit his modes of creation, Loh has also ventured into the realms of art merchandise, fusing graphic design, fashion, and music, showcasing his versatility as a multi-disciplinary artist. His innovative approach to art as well as curatorial direction has led to successful collaborations backed by record-breaking statistics with international brands. This multidimensional approach allows Loh to explore different mediums and engage with diverse audiences, further expanding the reach and impact of his artistic vision as a Singaporean artist within the greater Asian community. His art is a reflection of the complexities of our world, drawing attention to social issues, cultural clashes, and the ever-evolving nature of our existence.

Some of his key creations include his iconic luncheon meat and Spacemen series, which have found their way into the collections of famous celebrities and collectors such as Jay Chou, JJ Lin, Larry Warsh, the Casio Foundation, the Far East Organisation and the Fujiko Family Art Foundation.
